OK, shame I can't type. At the moment permissions are set so pretty much anybody can post without bothering to register, but registering allows private messaging and other features and the members chat section. If the forun is abused I will reset permissions tt registered members only, but registering is fREE and only takes a second.

Welcome!I just discovered your critique of the Wessex movement. I don't think I have ever made any secret of my romanticism, so I can't really argue with it! It gets very hard to read at the end, though, due to a lack of word-wrapping.
I will say one thing, though. You and other Celtic Devon people criticise us for our lack of public support. In a mature democracy, this is not a reason to give up. In my opinion, the whole point of democracy is that anyone has a right to express their views and attempt to win others to their cause. Someone on another forum I subscribe to had a quote from Lord Salisbury that goes something like this (quoted from memory, so may not be word-perfect): "Democracy means that a person, provided he does not harm others, may do as he wishes. It does not mean that six men may make five men do exactly as they wish". Curling up and dying because we are not as popular as the Cornish Nationalists, for example, does not serve the cause of democracy, unless you understand democracy as the tyranny of the majority.

Hello Nick, nice to have you on here. One little point; although I have sympathies towards the Celtic Devon people, I am not one myself. I also have sympathies with Cornish regionalists/nationalists. I sympathise with anyone who is trying to get the best deal for where they live.

CJ here, in admin mode. I certainly don't think Ed is a Celtic Devon person btw, he strikes me as quite cyical about Celtic Romanticism. I'd guess you are more likely to find him at a Regia Anglorum Saxon re-enactors gig. Me, I'm a Dane
I just moved the discussion of the Wessex Society over to the Somerset Flag forum for now. I thik it might be sensible to create a Wessex subforum, but I'll wait to see if there is any interest, as hardly ayone uses the forum at the moment.
Anyway the Wessex Society thread is now in Somerset Flag. Thanks to Nick for the wonderful dragons thread in there!

That's about right. I like new ideas and a different interpretation of history, but I don't believe in inventing culture to justify some sort of political end. Bob Burns, a Celtic Devon person, has listed Devon-style step dancing, Out Hurling, Devon-style wrestling and Crying the Neck as examples of Celtic culture in Devon. The last two are unique to Devon and Cornwall, so it's possible that that is true. To me that is interesting, but I wouldn't make it the basis of a political argument.
