I've been looking up all the Red Posts I can find in the Somerset area. These are road signs of the traditional finger post variety with red instead of the normal white posts. They can be found throughout the West Country in Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. They get their names from being the site of gallows.
They can be found in the following places:
Red Post Cross, Somerset south of Kingsdon on the A372
Red Post Inn, Bath Road, Peasedown St. John, Somerset
Red Post, Somerset on the Triscombe turning near Flaxpool on the A358
Red Post, on the A39 at the turning for West Luccombe, Somerset
Red Post Dorset north of Sherborne on the B3145
Red Post, Dorset east of Bere Regis on the A31
Red Post, Devon between Newton Abbot and Totnes on the A381
Red Post Inn, Cornwall near Bude, junction of the B3254 and the A3072
There are also White Posts at West Coker and Midsomer Norton in Somerset, in Dorset between Sherborne and Marston Magna and north of Molland in Devon. These I believe are to do with the mail.
Does anyone know of any more Red Posts in Somerset?
Ed
